Courage is the Root of Change

Change rarely happens without courage. Whether you're considering a career transition, pursuing a promotion, starting a business, or making a significant life decision, growth often requires stepping into uncertainty. While fear encourages us to stay where we are, courage empowers us to move toward what is possible. This article explores why courage is the root of change and how small, intentional acts of bravery can lead to greater confidence, resilience, and success in both your career and personal life.

The phrase "courage is the root of change" implies that the fundamental or foundational element necessary for any meaningful or transformative change is courage. In other words, the ability to face challenges, take risks, and overcome fears initiates and drives the change process.

Change often involves stepping into the unknown, breaking away from the familiar, and confronting uncertainties. It requires the strength of character to challenge the status quo, whether it's in one's personal life, professional endeavors, or societal contexts. Without courage, there may be a reluctance to embrace change, leading to stagnation and missed opportunities for growth and improvement.

I recently had a conversation with my 21-year-old son about his future. He completed his AA degree from Valencia College but now feels stuck in his professional life. Some readers might understand this feeling as "professional limbo," where one has no clear idea of one's career identity or how to discover it.

During the discussion, I told him almost everyone experiences "professional limbo," and the best way to move forward is to have courage. Courage provides the "muscle" or motivation to try something new to see if it is a good fit. It is the root of change or a catalyst to experience the next adventure. Since he was eight, he wanted to be a video game designer, like most boys lately. He is an avid gamer, artist, and anime fan. He visited Full Sail University's workshops several times to determine if the game designer role was the right path. Sadly, it was not. The revelation sent him into a temporary purgatory from which he has not emerged. As a result, he took a temporary role he is unhappy doing, which has widened the job-seeking lane. He is lost.

As a mom and a career strategist, I want the best for him, but I also want him to have the courage to make a professional change. He conducted a few informational interviews with family members and the local municipality to learn about processes, the education required, and the long-term potential. He is now open to learning a trade in electrical, HVAC, plumbing, or even a pool service technician. Candidates for these professions are getting smaller; they could use some good men and women. My son was open to exploring all of these options. He discovered that a trade profession might make sense since he loves to draw (he loves working with his hands). My approach to helping him with this discovery was to inquire about the things he loved doing most in a therapy association way. He realized that the opportunities are endless and these career choices are sustainable and flexible.

"Courage is the root of change" has transformative powers to revolutionize perspectives, open minds, and the strength to pivot. Remember my son, if you find yourself in a "professional limbo" and need encouragement. Having the courage to stay resilient in the face of difficulties allows you to learn from setbacks and keep moving forward, which is crucial for a successful career transition. Ask questions, try new things, shadow professionals - do it all. You may be pleasantly surprised.
