Networking needs to be a continuous, conscious stream of engagement. Gone are the days of making a connection and not nurturing it. Job seekers cannot expect to connect or “friend” someone and never communicate. It defeats the purpose of networking.
What are the best ways to network? Here are my top 10 tips for 2024:
1. Leverage FRANK: He may be a buddy. However, FRANK is your Friends, Relatives, Acquaintances, Neighbors, and Kids. This is a powerful resource as the people in this circle know you and can advocate for you effectively.
2. Use LinkedIn: There are many efforts on this platform that work. #SocialSaturday, Informational Interviews, follow ups with a hiring manager, connecting with co-workers and managers, and the list goes on.
3. Job Fairs and Career Expos: Get out of the house and meet people face to face. There is a personal connection made with these events. No one is ever going to give you a job because you need one. They do it because they like you first. Show your personality and make that human connection.
4. Social Media Posts: This is not about posting pictures of your cat or kid on Instagram or Facebook. This approach is about posting relevant content about your career focus. Creating blogs or prompts on social media will get conversations started. Do it consistently and people will remember you the next time an opportunity comes up.
5. Temp Agencies: These offices are unsung heroes with loads of job opportunities in your community. Connect with a recruiter in a temp space and test drive some positions. This approach allows you to see under the hood of a company and network with the internal staff. Again, if they like you (and vice versa) it could lead to a permanent placement.
6. Conventions or Speaking Engagements: These events are industry-focused and bring together a group of people with the same interests in the same field. If you are looking to break into your dream career, attend a seminar, convention, or speaking engagement. You can network with the attendees or the speaker(s) themselves.
7. Professional Associations: Join professional associations in your industry. They offer a vast roster of professionals who are eager to connect and assist fellow cohorts in the industry. They also provide educational opportunities without the commitment of a 4 year degree.
8. Volunteering: Offer your time and skills to volunteer at industry-related events or organizations. Volunteering is a great way to meet like-minded individuals and showcase your abilities in your local community. Many candidates overlook their local area for opportunities.
9. Hackathons and Coding Bootcamps: If you're in the tech industry, participate in hackathons or attend coding bootcamps. These events bring together tech enthusiasts, developers, and industry professionals.
10. Toastmasters International: Join a Toastmasters club to improve your public speaking and communication skills. It's also an excellent platform to meet professionals from various backgrounds.
Remember, you cannot call upon networks that you have not grown and expect immediate results. Networking is like a garden, and it needs attention all year long for roots to connect and grow.
